The GFTx Biomass Strategy and the European Initiative
GFTx unveils its comprehensive biomass strategy, aligning with European sustainability goals.

AABENRAA, DENMARK – In a strategic move aligning with the government's commitment to advance the biomass industry, GlobalFund Trading Xchange (GFTx) and EnstedHavn, Bulk Terminal of Aabenraa, Denmark, have joined forces under the GFTx Biomass Strategy (GBS) 2023. This collaboration aims to contribute significantly to the government's efforts to promote sustainable practices and harness the potential of biomass energy.
Under the GBS 2023 blueprint, the ASEAN biomass feedstock per year is projected to reach approximately 230 million tons, sourced from diverse waste streams, including agricultural residues, agro-industrial wastes, and woody biomass. Biomass energy holds immense promise in reducing CO₂ emissions and meeting the EU’s increasing energy demands.
The European Union is actively pursuing its goals of establishing a sustainable and circular bio-based economy. However, it faces environmental challenges, particularly in the forestry and agriculture sectors. Biomass, constituting nearly 60% of the EU’s total renewable energy sources, must adhere to sustainability criteria to qualify for renewable targets and subsidies.
The EU’s biomass production, supply, uses, and flows are estimated at 1.2 billion tonnes of dry matter, with an anticipated 10% increase in import value by 2023.
EnstedHavn, Bulk Terminal of Aabenraa, has been working closely with GlobalFund Trading Xchange to provide innovative logistics solutions for the biomass industry. This collaboration holds the promise of developing a comprehensive end-to-end value chain for the biomass sector, addressing key challenges and contributing to sustainable growth.

Key Highlights of the Collaboration
- Government-Backed Initiative: The collaboration aligns with the government’s GBS 2023, showing a shared commitment to sustainable practices and the biomass industry's role in the energy transition.
